Testimonials

From last years participants!

"There is something refreshing about being out in the wide open landscapes and natures beauty.  It's not a trek for the faint hearted but the view at the top made it all worth while. Thanks to the FitzGerald family who opened their farm to us for the day.  We will be back."

Nicole and Ryan

"The walk, the views and the opportunity to support the wonderful Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was amazing. Thank you Maungahau Station."

Behind the Event

You do not expect to be rescued even once let alone twice but Geoffrey was…"

Two-time past patient Geoffrey hosts the Walk for a Cause: Maungahau as a thank you for the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter that saved his life not once, but TWICE!

His first rescue happened one summer afternoon when he was thrown from his quad bike as it rolled over him.

‘The bike landed on top of me, rolling another 3 or 4 times, and landed in the gully,’ Geoffrey says.

Stunned but unharmed, he managed to upright his quad and returned home, where he collapsed. His wife Johanna called their GP, who urged them to get an ambulance. Living 32 km from Te Awamutu, the ambulance arrived shortly after his collapse. For faster transport, the Waikato Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called in, likely saving his life. He suffered severe internal bleeding and damage to his kidney, spleen, and pancreas, and a later arrival could have been fatal. After two months in the hospital, surgeons advised him to avoid physical work for 18 months to heal. Managing his farm and hunting lodge was tough, but he recognised his luck and followed his recovery plan.

But this is not the end of Geoffrey’s story...
